Adam Wingard will not return to direct the next Godzilla x Kong installment, stepping aside due to scheduling conflicts and a renewed focus on original storytelling. Following the massive success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Legendary hoped to fast-track the next sequel. However, Wingard had already committed to Onslaught, an action-thriller for A24 slated to film in fall 2024, making the timelines impossible to align.

Sources describe the split as entirely amicable. Wingard has long expressed his desire to return to more personal, original projects, and Onslaught offered exactly that opportunity. Although he won’t be leading the next MonsterVerse entry, the door remains open for him to return in future installments—if schedules allow.

Meanwhile, Legendary is pushing ahead. Dave Callaham, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has been hired to write the script, and the search for a new director is underway.
